
Fourth year Engineering students presented the outcomes of their Group Design projects supervised by Prof William Powrie, Prof Dominic Hudson, Prof Joel Smethurst and Dr Toby Roberts at a lunchtime event held at Boldrewood Innovation Campus on Monday 17th February.

Prof Powrie introduced iPACT to the audience and summarised the network aims and research themes.

Southampton: Reconnecting the city with the Waterfront
The group presented their project considering the barriers to the waterfront: Economic, Port sites, depravation, poor range of waterside access areas, poor transport connectivity,
Benefits included: green spaces linking to the water at Mayflower Park, Riverside Park and Weston Shore.




Itchen Barrier: Defending Southampton from Coastal Flooding
Tidal flooding is becoming a greater challenge due to climate change and the city council has plans for new defences. This group discussed other options including a barrier in the river Itchen, self raising barriers and opening areas of the waterfront for public access to the water.
